“I have learned to live life to the fullest, follow your dreams, capitalize on the potential you have, keep learning, and never give up.”

-Dr. Nathie L. Marbury

Hello everyone- I'd like to talk to you about a very important person, Dr. Nathie L. Marbury. (Shows name sign- N-handshape on the chin, then ending at the upper chest). She was the founder of, and the author of TRUE+WAY ASL. She was born in Grenada, Mississippi on January 20, 1944. Her childhood was spent in Pennsylvania. She attended and graduated from Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) in June 1962. She eventually went to Gallaudet University, studied for a degree in Child Development, and graduated with her Bachelor's degree in May 1975. Immediately afterward, she enrolled at California State University at Northridge (CSUN) for a Masters' Degree in Special Education, graduating in August 1976. Later on, she eventually returned to CSUN to earn her second Masters' degree in Educational Administration and Supervision, Graduating in January 1988. A lifelong student, she continued her studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, as a doctoral student in the field of Applied Linguistics. She completed all of the coursework and exams at UCLA. She experienced barriers and oppression during her doctoral journey at UCLA so she decided to leave the program, and eventually completed her doctorate in Education at Lamar University in 2007. Can you imagine- Dr. Marbury has a Bachelor's, Master's. another Master's, an All but Dissertation (ABD) distinction, and a Doctorate! An amazing feat, considering!

Dr. Marbury was a trailblazing pioneer, ahead of her time. She often achieved many "firsts" in her career. She was the first Black Deaf woman to teach at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School for the Deaf from 1978 to 1986, among many, many accomplishments, including behind the founder of and author of TRUE+WAY ASL. Sadly, she passed away on April 15, 2013, at 69 years old. People remember her very boisterous, beautiful laugh, her incredible poetic and powerful signing, as well as her witty comebacks the most. Her legacy lives on through TRUE+WAY ASL and through her countless videos for students studying ASL. In those videos, her entertaining sense of humor shines, as well as her profound ASL poetry, storytelling, and written English poetry. In honor of Dr. Nathie L. Marbury's wishes, ten percent of TWA profits for Levels 1 and 2 are donated to WPSD on an annual basis, to go to a graduating Student of Color for college funds.

We love you, Dr. Nathie L. Marbury!
